Because that television is now worth real money. CRT prices have climbed hard over the last five years, and the sets that people once paid haulers to take away are being listed at prices that would have sounded insane a decade ago. Consumer models that were free on Craigslist now go for a few hundred dollars. Professional monitors go for a few thousand.

The obvious explanation is nostalgia. The obvious explanation is also wrong, or at least incomplete. There are real technical reasons a 25-year-old tube TV displays classic consoles better than a brand new OLED, and once you understand what those reasons are, the price spike stops looking like a bubble and starts looking like a market correcting for scarcity.

Here is the whole picture: what these things are, why they matter, which ones to look for, what to pay, and what to do if you decide the whole hunt is not worth the trouble.

What Is a CRT TV?

A CRT TV is a television built around a cathode ray tube, the big glass funnel that makes these sets so deep and so heavy. Every television made before roughly 2005 used one. Then LCD panels got cheap, plasma had its brief moment, and the entire category vanished from store shelves inside of about five years.

What Does CRT Stand For?

CRT stands for cathode ray tube. The tube is a sealed vacuum chamber with an electron gun at the narrow end and a phosphor-coated screen at the wide end. The gun fires a beam of electrons. Magnetic coils steer that beam. When electrons strike the phosphor coating, the phosphor glows.

That is the entire display technology. No pixels in the modern sense, no backlight, no liquid crystal, no processing chip deciding what to show you.

How a Tube TV Actually Makes a Picture

The electron beam sweeps across the screen left to right, drops down, and sweeps again, painting the image one horizontal line at a time. It does this fast enough that your eye reads it as a continuous picture. In a color television, three beams fire at red, green, and blue phosphors arranged in a repeating pattern behind a mask or grille that keeps each beam hitting only its intended color.

The important part for gaming is what is missing from that description. There is no frame buffer. There is no scaler. There is no processing step between the signal arriving at the input and light coming off the screen. The console sends a signal, the beam draws it, and that is the whole chain.

Modern displays cannot work that way. An LCD or OLED panel has to receive a full frame, decide how to map it onto a fixed grid of physical pixels, apply whatever processing the manufacturer built in, and then display it. That pipeline takes time, and time is the thing retro games are most sensitive to.

Why Are CRT TVs Making a Comeback in 2026?

Three things happened at once.

The retro gaming scene grew from a hobbyist niche into a genuine market. Original hardware collecting went mainstream, emulation handhelds got good, and a generation that grew up with the NES and Genesis reached the age where disposable income and nostalgia intersect. Then the sellers noticed. Once a thing has demand and a shrinking supply, the flippers arrive. A significant chunk of what you see listed today is people who bought cheap, slapped “retro gaming ready” in the title, and marked it up. That is not a conspiracy, it is just how markets work, but it means the sticker price on a lot of listings has drifted well past what the set is actually worth.

Can You Play Games on a CRT TV?

Yes, and for anything released before the mid-2000s, it is the intended experience.

Any console from the NES through the PlayStation 2 and GameCube era was designed and tested on a tube TV. The developers made their art on tube TVs. The QA testers played on tube TVs. Nobody involved in making Super Mario World imagined it being displayed on a 65-inch flat panel eight feet away.

Connection is straightforward. Most classic consoles output through composite or RF, both of which every CRT accepts. Better cables get you better results, and we will get into the hierarchy shortly, but the baseline case is plug it in and play.

Modern consoles are a different story. An Xbox Series X or PS5 outputs HDMI only, and no CRT has an HDMI port. There are converters, but you would be downgrading a 4K signal to standard definition for no reason. Keep the tube TV for the old stuff.

What Makes CRT Better for Retro Games?

Four things, and only one of them is aesthetic.

Zero Input Lag

Because there is no processing pipeline, a CRT displays the signal essentially the instant it arrives. Latency is measured in microseconds, which is to say it does not exist in any sense a human can perceive.

Modern televisions have gotten much better about this, and a good gaming display in game mode might get down to eight or ten milliseconds. That is fine for most things. It is not fine for the games that were balanced around instant response. Anything requiring frame-perfect input, from Contra to Punch-Out to a shmup like Gradius, feels subtly wrong when there is even a small delay between the button and the screen. On a tube, that gap is gone.

Native 240p and Why Modern TVs Choke on It

Most classic consoles output 240p. It is a non-standard signal, technically a progressive scan version of a format that was never supposed to exist, and it works fine on a CRT because the CRT does not care about resolution in the way a fixed-pixel display does. The beam just draws fewer lines.

A modern display has a native resolution and has to scale everything to fit it. Scaling 240p to 4K means multiplying by a non-integer factor, which produces uneven pixel sizes, blurry edges, and shimmer during scrolling. Some televisions handle 240p badly. Some refuse the signal entirely and show nothing. That is why retro games often appear letterboxed, stretched, or just plain wrong on new hardware.

Scanlines, Phosphor Glow, and How Pixel Art Was Designed

Between each drawn line is a thin gap where no phosphor fires. Those are scanlines, and they are not a bug. Artists working in the 8-bit and 16-bit eras built their pixel art knowing the display would blend and soften it. The glow of the phosphor bleeds slightly into neighboring areas. Dithering patterns that look like ugly checkerboards on a sharp modern panel resolve into smooth gradients and transparency effects on a tube.

The waterfalls in Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis are the classic example. On original hardware through composite into a CRT, they look transparent. On an emulator with a sharp modern display, they look like a grid of alternating dots. The art was designed for the display, and separating the two loses information.

Light Gun Games Simply Do Not Work on Flat Panels

This one is not a preference. It is physics. Light guns like the NES Zapper and the various arcade GunCon models work by detecting the timing of the electron beam as it sweeps past the point the gun is aimed at. No beam, no timing signal, no functioning gun. Duck Hunt, Time Crisis, Point Blank, House of the Dead, and every other light gun title requires a tube. There are workaround products, but a CRT is the only thing that works as designed.

Is CRT or OLED Better for Retro Gaming?

Depends what you mean by better, and I want to be straight rather than tribal about this.

An OLED beats a CRT on almost every conventional spec. Higher resolution. Perfect black levels. Vastly more brightness. Weighs forty pounds instead of two hundred. Hangs on a wall. Uses a fraction of the power. Will not develop geometry drift or need a capacitor replaced in five years.

For retro content specifically, the CRT still wins on the four points above, and no amount of processing fully closes that gap. Even with excellent CRT simulation filters, the effect is an approximation. Phosphor bloom and beam physics are analog behaviors, and emulating them on a fixed pixel grid gets close without getting there.

The honest answer is that a modern OLED paired with a good upscaler gets you most of the way, with none of the weight and none of the maintenance. A CRT gets you all of the way, with all of the weight and all of the maintenance. Neither choice is stupid. What matters is whether you want the authentic thing or the convenient thing, and it is fine to want the convenient thing.

Plasma sits in an interesting middle ground, by the way. Plasma displays handle motion better than LCD and have their own phosphor-based glow, and a good late-model plasma is genuinely underrated for retro content. They are also becoming as scarce as CRTs.

Are HD CRT TVs Good for Retro Gaming?

Usually not, and this is the trap most first-time buyers fall into.

HD CRTs exist. Sony’s WEGA XBR line and similar sets from other manufacturers were the last generation of tube televisions, built to handle 1080i and widescreen content. They look modern. They often have component inputs. They seem like the obvious upgrade.

The problem is internal processing. Most HD CRTs take an incoming 240p signal and upscale it internally to 480i or higher before displaying it. That upscaling step introduces the exact lag and the exact scaling artifacts you bought a tube television to avoid. You end up with a two hundred pound set that performs like a mediocre flat panel.

There are exceptions, and some HD sets pass 240p cleanly, but you have to research the specific model. If your primary use is 8-bit and 16-bit consoles, a plain standard definition set is the safer buy and usually the cheaper one. Save the HD hunt for later if you get deep into the hobby and want to run a PS2 or GameCube in progressive mode.

Same caution applies to the flat screen sets generally. A curved screen tube is the older, simpler design, and while a flat screen CRT looks tidier next to a computer desk, flat-faced tubes are more prone to geometry problems at the corners and more likely to carry extra processing. The curve is not a flaw. It is what the tube naturally wants to be.

Which CRT TV Is Best for Retro Gaming?

The market splits into three tiers, and you should understand all three before you spend anything.

Consumer CRTs

These are the ordinary living room televisions everyone had. They are the most common, the cheapest, and for most people the correct answer.

Sony Trinitron sets are the standard recommendation and deserve the reputation. The Trinitron design uses an aperture grille instead of a shadow mask, which produces a brighter and sharper image. Look for late-model standard definition Sony sets in the 20 inch range with S-Video or component inputs.

Toshiba made excellent sets, particularly the Blackstripe series, which has a devoted following for its picture quality and its inputs. JVC produced strong sets across their range. Panasonic, RCA, Magnavox, Philips, Zenith, Sharp, and Sanyo all made perfectly good televisions, and while the top brands command a premium, plenty of no-name sets look great.

Real talk on price: a working consumer set with decent inputs is worth somewhere between free and a couple hundred dollars depending on your local market and how patient you are. Anything above that is you paying for someone else’s convenience.

PVMs and Professional Monitors

A PVM is a Professional Video Monitor, built for broadcast studios and edit bays rather than living rooms. Sony PVM models are the famous ones, but JVC, Ikegami, and Panasonic all made professional units worth owning.

The difference is resolution and build quality. A consumer set might resolve 250 to 300 TV lines. A PVM typically hits 600 to 800. The picture is dramatically sharper, the geometry is more accurate, and the inputs are better, usually including RGB via BNC connectors. They also tend to run smaller, with 14 inch and 20 inch models being the common sizes.

They are also expensive and getting worse. A Sony PVM in good condition is a several hundred dollar purchase minimum, and the desirable models go well past that.

BVMs

A BVM is a Broadcast Video Monitor, the tier above PVM, used for mastering and color-critical work. Resolution climbs past 900 lines. Geometry, color accuracy, and black levels are the best a tube ever achieved.

These are endgame hardware. They are rare, they are heavy, they are complicated to service, and they cost more than most people’s entire console collection. Owning one is a flex, not a requirement. The gap between a good consumer set and a PVM is large. The gap between a PVM and a BVM is real but much smaller, and you are paying a lot for it.

Shadow Mask vs Aperture Grille

An aperture grille uses vertical wires and lets more electrons through, producing a brighter, sharper, higher-contrast image. The tradeoff is one or two thin horizontal damper wires visible across the screen on solid bright backgrounds. Sony Trinitron sets use this design.

A shadow mask uses a perforated metal sheet. Slightly dimmer and slightly softer, no damper wires, and some people prefer the gentler look for pixel art specifically.

Neither is wrong. If you have never used both, do not agonize over it. The community argues about this constantly and it is genuinely down to preference.

What Size CRT Is the Sweet Spot?

Twenty to twenty-seven inches, and I would push most people toward twenty.

Screen size interacts with resolution in a way that is not intuitive. A tube has a fixed number of scan lines regardless of how big the screen is, so stretching that same line count across a bigger surface makes everything softer. A 32 inch consumer CRT does not look better than a 20 inch one, it looks bigger and blurrier.

Big sets also become absurd fast. A 27 inch tube runs well past a hundred pounds. A 32 inch or larger becomes a two-person job and a genuine risk to your floor and your back. The largest CRTs ever made are fascinating trivia and terrible purchases.

Small sets have their place. A portable CRT or a mini set in the 9 to 13 inch range is perfect for a bedroom setup, a desk, or hauling to a friend’s house, and they are usually cheap because nobody wants them. The picture on a small tube is often very sharp for the same reason a big one is soft. A retro mini TV setup on a shelf next to your consoles is a legitimately great use of thirty dollars.

Also worth knowing: many small sets are CRTV combo units with a built-in VCR. Those are frequently dismissed, but the tube inside is often perfectly good, and having a VHS deck attached is a bonus rather than a penalty. They tend to be cheaper because the VCR mechanism has usually failed, which does not affect the television at all.

What Inputs Should You Look For?

This matters more than the brand on the front. A mediocre set with good inputs beats a great set with only RF.

The Input Hierarchy From Worst to Best

RF (coaxial). The signal is modulated onto a television channel and demodulated by the tuner. Everything gets soft, noisy, and slightly wrong. Avoid unless it is your only option.

Composite (the yellow RCA jack). All video information crammed onto one wire. Color bleeds into brightness, producing the fuzzy look people associate with old televisions. It is genuinely how most people played these games at the time, and certain art relies on the blending, but it is the low end of acceptable.

S-Video. Separates brightness from color onto two channels. A large, immediately visible jump in clarity over composite, and supported by most consoles from the SNES and Genesis era forward. If a set has S-Video, that alone makes it worth considering.

Component video. Three cables carrying separated color difference signals. Excellent quality, common on later consumer sets in North America, and the format of choice for PS2 and GameCube progressive output.

RGB. The best analog signal available, delivered over SCART in Europe or BNC connectors on professional monitors. Fully separated red, green, and blue with sync. If you are in North America and want RGB on a consumer set, you are usually looking at a SCART to component transcoder or hunting a professional monitor instead.

One practical note. Front-mounted AV inputs are worth seeking out. Reaching behind a hundred pound television every time you swap consoles gets old immediately.

What About CRT Computer Monitors?

Different category, overlapping appeal, and often overlooked.

A CRT computer monitor connects over VGA and handles high refresh rates and higher resolutions than any television. For PC gaming from the DOS and early Windows era, a good CRT monitor is the authentic display and there is no substitute. For light gun games on PC and for anything where you want extremely high refresh with zero lag, a CRT pc display still outperforms most modern panels on those specific axes.

They are also generally cheaper than television-format tubes, smaller, and easier to move. A 19 or 21 inch professional grade monitor on a desk is a genuinely great setup.

The catch is console compatibility. A VGA monitor will not accept a 240p signal from a console without a converter, because the scan rate is wrong. There are boxes that handle this, but if your goal is playing an SNES, a television is the simpler path. If your goal is running an old PC or an arcade cabinet, the monitor is the right tool.

Where Can You Find a CRT TV in 2026?

Supply is thinning but it is not gone. The sets are out there, they are just no longer sitting on curbs waiting for you.

Facebook Marketplace is the single best source. Search a range of terms, because sellers describe these things inconsistently. Try tube TV, old TV, CRT, vintage television, box TV, and the brand names individually. Filter to free and cheap listings first. Set alerts and be patient.

Estate sales and thrift stores. Thrift stores in many areas stopped accepting them because they could not move them, but the ones that still take them price them low. Estate sales are excellent because the family generally wants the house emptied.

Craigslist free section. Still productive in some markets, particularly for larger sets nobody wants to move.

Local buy nothing groups. People with a used CRT in the garage who feel bad throwing it away.

eBay. Works, but shipping a CRT is expensive and risky, and the prices reflect a national market rather than your local one. Reasonable for small sets and professional monitors, poor value for ordinary consumer televisions.

Recycling centers and e-waste days. Ask. Some will let you take units. Some are legally prohibited. Worth a phone call.

What You Should Actually Pay

A working consumer standard definition set with S-Video should cost you between nothing and around a hundred dollars. A well-regarded model in excellent condition might justify a bit more. A Sony PVM is a several hundred dollar item and up. A BVM is four figures.

If someone is asking three hundred dollars for a generic 20 inch consumer set with composite only, walk away. Another one will turn up. The flipper premium on this stuff is significant and you do not have to pay it.

Always test before buying. Bring a console and a cable. Check the corners for geometry problems, look for burn-in on solid colors, listen for unusual whining, and confirm every input actually works. A remote control is a nice bonus, and universal remotes cover most sets if the original is gone.

What Are the Downsides of Owning a CRT?

The people selling you on tube gaming tend to skip this part. It deserves an honest section.

The weight is not a joke. A 27 inch set is over a hundred pounds of glass and metal with no good handholds. People hurt themselves moving these. Get help, use proper technique, and think carefully about whether your furniture can hold it.

They fail, and the failures are electrical. Capacitors dry out over decades. Flyback transformers die. Solder joints crack. Symptoms include the picture collapsing to a horizontal line, refusing to power on, dimming, or developing color problems. Some of this is repairable by a hobbyist with soldering skills. Some of it needs a specialist, and specialists are getting rare.

Servicing one is genuinely dangerous. The anode inside a CRT holds a lethal charge that persists after the set is unplugged, sometimes for a long time. It has to be properly discharged before anyone reaches inside. This is not a “be careful” situation, it is a “learn the procedure or do not open it” situation.

Geometry drifts. Corners bow, the image tilts, edges stop being straight. Some sets have service menu adjustments that fix it. Some do not.

They run hot and eat power. A tube television draws far more electricity than a comparable modern panel and dumps that energy into your room as heat. In a small space in summer, you will notice.

Space. Two feet of depth is a lot of furniture. A dedicated setup usually means a dedicated corner.

None of this should stop you if you want one. All of it should factor into whether you want two.

What If You Cannot Find a CRT? Upscalers and Filters

Not everyone can commit to a two hundred pound television, and the alternatives have gotten legitimately good.

Dedicated upscalers are the serious option. Devices like the RetroTINK line and the OSSC sit between your console and a modern display, taking the analog signal and converting it to HDMI with proper integer scaling and minimal added lag. The higher-end units add scanline simulation, phosphor mask emulation, and beam glow effects that get remarkably close to the tube look on an OLED. This route costs real money, several hundred dollars for a good unit, but it works with your original console and original controllers on a display you already own.

Simpler adapters exist at the cheap end. Basic AV to HDMI converter boxes will get an old console onto a modern television for twenty or thirty dollars. They do not do proper scaling, they add lag, and the result is soft. Fine for occasional use, not a real solution.

Emulator filters are the free option. Every serious emulator front end includes CRT shader options, and the good ones are sophisticated, simulating aperture grille patterns, scanline intensity, and phosphor bloom. They cannot recreate beam physics exactly, but on a high resolution display they get close enough that most people are happy.

FPGA hardware like the MiSTer platform recreates original console hardware at the circuit level rather than emulating it in software, and outputs both analog signals for a tube and digital for a modern panel. It is the enthusiast answer to accuracy without collecting a shelf of original consoles.

The honest ranking: original console into a CRT is the reference. Original console into a good upscaler into an OLED is very close and much more livable. Emulation with good shaders is further away but costs nothing and fits in your existing setup.

CRT TV FAQ

Is it safe to leave a CRT plugged in?
Yes, in normal use. They were household appliances for fifty years. Standard sensible practice applies, do not block the ventilation, do not run one in a sealed cabinet, and unplug during electrical storms.

Do CRTs get burn-in?
They can, from static images displayed for extremely long periods. It was mostly a problem for televisions used as store displays or arcade monitors running the same attract screen for years. Normal gaming will not do it.

Can I use a CRT for anything besides retro games?

The whole point is the experience, and the experience is genuinely different in a way that reading about it does not convey. Load up a Genesis, sit three feet from a 20 inch Trinitron, and the thing you have been reading about becomes obvious in about four seconds.

If a tube is not realistic for your space or your back, get a good upscaler and stop feeling bad about it. The gap between the reference experience and the practical one has never been smaller.

Just do not walk past a free Trinitron on the curb. Learn from those of us who did.
